Sleeping Positions

Did you know that on average you will sleep for around a quarter of your life?

With so much of our lives spent asleep it is amazing that so few of us realise the impact it has on almost every aspect of our waking lives. Scientists have claimed that not only can the position that you fall asleep in affects the quality of your nights rest but apparently it can tell a lot about who you are. What was interesting for the researchers is that the profile behind the posture is often very different from what they expected.

Recent studies have shown that sleeping positions can be linked to particular personality traits. Generally there are three main sleeping positions: Side sleeping, back sleeping and stomach sleeping. Within these sleeping positions there are also variations.

Positions studied included

Foetus (Approximately 51 percent of women and 41 percent of all 1000 people surveyed sleep curled up on one side)
If you are a person who curls up in the fetus position you are described as tough on the outside but sensitive at heart. You may be shy when you first meet somebody, but soon relax. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position.

The Log (Approximately 15% of all 1000 peoples surveyed sleep lying on their side with both arms down by their side)
If you enjoy lying on your side with both arms down by your side then you are a Log. lYou are described as an easy going, social person who likes being part of the in-crowd, and are trusting of strangers.

The Yearner
(Approximately 13% of all 1000 peoples surveyed sleep lying on their side with both arms out in front of them )
If you enjoy sleeping on your side with both arms out in front, then you are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious or cynical. You are slow to make up your mind, but once you have made a decision, you are unlikely to change it.

The Soldier
(Approximately 8% of 1000 peoples surveyed sleep lying on their back with both arms straight down their sides)
If you enjoy lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides then you are a Soldier. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet, reserved and keep to themselves and reserved. They don't like a fuss, but hold themselves and others to high standards. They are perfectionists and set themselves and those around them to very high standards. In addition this position is said to contribute to snoring and a bad night’s sleep.

The Freefall
((Approximately 7% of 1000 peoples surveyed sleep lying on their front with their hands around the pillow an head turned to one side),
If you enjoy lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side then you are regarded as a freefall personality. You are often gregarious and brash, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and you don't like criticism, or extreme situations.

If the percentages don’t add up it is because the remainder of those in the poll said the position in which they fell asleep varied or they did not know.
